Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
Do you feel weary today? And not just the normal kind of ‘I didn’t sleep well’ tiredness but that deep kind of exhaustion which settles inside you and needs more than just a good night sleep or a spa day to cure? Maybe you feel close to the edge today, ready to give up.
The beginning of faith is the moment that you say, ‘I can’t do this.’ We have to come to the end of ourselves in order to go beyond ourselves. We live in an age of Disney movies that tell us that all we need to do is believe in ourselves and we can accomplish anything. It is cute but misleading and will lead you to disappointment, shame and burn out. The truth is that it is in surrender that we find surprising strength.
In every area of life, the decision that we all face is the choice between walking in blessing or control. Brian Houston asks whether you want to live in the ‘Fast Lane’ or the ‘Faith Lane’? When you live in the Fast Lane you will work all the hours you can, you will fight, you will stress over results and give everything that you have. But it is never enough. This is the person in the office who is always the last one to leave. They sacrifice time with their family and friends because they are always too busy. Gradually these people become controlling, brittle and stressed. They are on a road to burn out.
However, there are other people, who seem to live completely out of their depths and yet are somehow completely relaxed. They seem to always have energy. They don’t stress in the same way and somehow have time for the people they care about the most. They manage to achieve twice as much in half the time because they have learnt the secret of faith and work. To trust in the Lord.
Perhaps you know these people and resent them. You resent how light their lives seem to be and the joy that they have. However, you can’t seem to let go of control.
Why do you think that God commands you to take a Sabbath? This is a day to let go every week and trust in God. Seek first the Lord and everything you need will be given to you. He will open up the doors and lead you into all the opportunities that you need. Invest in prayer. Spend time listening to God’s voice and trust His way. This choice becomes harder, the more emotional we are about the thing that we are fighting for. To step back, to let it go seems irresponsible and foolish. However, it is the opposite. When you realise that you can choose to work out of your strength or the Lord’s then you will find yourself soaring far beyond your capacity and others will watch in wonder.
Get comfy out of your depths.
